Overall high quality boot. Stitch-down

From:  Age:  Gender:
Overall high quality boot. Stitch-down construction is excellent and the outsole, midsole, and heel wedge are very well put together. The boots are comfortable and warm. The 600g of insulation is not excessive in 20deg weather while wearing a light to mid-weight wool sock. The leather around the ankle and calf flex and move well during the break-in period and aren’t too stiff. My one criticism is as follows: I have seen hundreds of pairs of leather boots in my day at various levels of quality and types of leather. In general, I am unimpressed by the leather quality of these boots. They appear by look and touch to be a full grain leather that’s been scraped to remove “blemishes” and thereby made into a more delicate top grain leather. This has made the leather thinner and less robust to hold up to heavy use. The rich, heavy pebble-grain texture of a full grain leather that hasn’t been split is a far better quality, for not only practical use but for developing a rich patina and broken-in leather. There may have been specific reasons for using top grain leather for this boot, but at the price point, a full grain leather should be used in my opinion. Furthermore, surface “blemishes” add character and uniqueness to each boot, but that is pure preference on my part. I think Danner has done well with these boots and is selling a good product, but true leather craftsmen would find this leather quality lacking. Reference WC Russell or White’s Boots for the kind of full grain quality I am describing. Cheers! Hunt and shoot well all.
