Frequently Asked Questions

FR stands for Flame Resistant, which is a form of personal protective equipment (PPE). Carhartt manufactures FR clothing for those working in hazardous environments where electric, flash fire, and combustible dust explosions are possible.
All Carhartt FR falls into one of the four major FR categories:

- Category 1 is the lowest category. This category requires only 1 layer of FR arc-rated clothing – an FR shirt and FR pants, or FR coveralls. The required minimum ARC rating is 4 cal/cm2.

- Category 2 usually requires 1 or 2 layers of FR clothing – an arc-rated FR shirt and FR pants, or FR coveralls. The required minimum arc-rating is 8 cal/cm2.

- Category 3 typically requires 2 or 3 layers of FR clothing – an arc-rated FR shirt and FR pants, or just FR coveralls, plus an arc-rated flash suit. The required minimum arc-rating is 25 cal/cm2.

- Category 4 is the highest category. This category typically requires 3 layers - an arc-rated FR shirt and FR pants, or just FR coveralls, plus an arc-rated flash suit. The required minimum ARC rating is 40 cal/cm2
Carhartt Flame Resistant gear is available in bibs and coveralls, jackets and coats, jeans and pants, sweatshirts, and t-shirts.

- FR Jackets and Coats sit above or at the hip, depending on the style. Some styles offer a drop tail hem for added coverage when you’re reaching up or bending over.

- FR Bibs and Coveralls require waist and inseam measurements to find the right fit. For your inseam, measure from your crotch to the bottom of the leg hem on a pair of pants that fit you well. Then, measure around your natural waistline to find your waist measurement. More on inseams: some Carhartt bib styles are available in either regular, short or tall lengths instead of numeric inseam. Here’s how to choose the right inseam:

- FR Jeans and Pants are available in two fits: relaxed and loose.

- FR Tops (Button-Ups, T-Shirts, and Sweatshirts) are available in two fit options - loose or relaxed.
- Loose Fit, formerly known as Original Fit, is cut larger to provide a roomier fit in the chest, shoulders, and waist.
- Relaxed Fit sweatshirts are snugger and fit closer to the body.
